Here’s presenting to some of the best bike primary and secondary locks currently available in the market.
After much research and experimentation we came to realize the U locks or D locks were the most durable and sturdy against many others. The top three primary bike locks include:
Kryptonite New York 3000 STD
An excellent lock which steals the show is the Kryptonite New York 3000 STD. This is a favourite with many because of its double bolt mechanism, strength and size. It comes in a bright yellow crossbar and costs approximately $60. The locks come with a competitive anti-theft protection. Apparently they give you a large sum of money if your lock is compromised, which seems like a marketing strategy on part of the manufacturers. The locks are quite heavy and need to be carried around in a bag. This lock is best used for leaving your bike for a long period of time.
Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit Mini
The Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit Mini is one of the Best Bike locks available with an incredibly thick shackle made of 18mm hardened steel. The lock itself is very small but it has a double deadbolt mechanism. The size of the lock is slightly small, which makes it a little difficult to fit your frame, wheel or a piece of street furniture in it. The best thing about this lock is that it provides so less space that it makes it extremely difficult fot a thief to attack the bike or even try squeezing a bottle jack inside. The weight of the Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit Mini is approximately 2kg and is best carried in a bag. This lock comes for around $90.
Abus Granit Extreme 59
According to its manufacturers, the Abus Granit Extreme 59 is one of the strongest D locks one can buy. It comes for a hefty price of $210 which certainly burns a hole in your pocket. All good locks are supposed to be heavy, but this lock is the heaviest at 3kg. Even though the shackle is much thinner than the Fahgettaboudit it performed very well during experimentation and testing. Its size is bigger than the Fahgettaboudit which means there is more space to attach the bike to a piece of street furniture. The only disadvantage is that it makes carrying around the Abus Granit Extreme 59 heavy to carry around. For those who are not willing to compromise on the security of their bike, this is the best bike lock option.
Secondary locks are used in addition to the primary locks for extra security. These are used for short periods of time. One lock which makes the cut is the Kryptonite Evolution Mini. The lock is a favourite amongst the cool kids as it fits simply into one’s back pocket. With a weight of only 0.9kg, this is a good option for those who are not willing to carry around heavy locks. It comes with a single bolt mechanism and a shackle of 13mm. The lock does its job wonderfully. It costs $50 which is quite affordable. If you combine this secondary lock with a tough primary lock, you are likely to keep thieves away. There are also some mountain bike brands that offer some of the best quality locks.
